Wassama Round House State Historic Park
Ahwahnee, California (Madera County)
Wassama Round House State Historic Park preserves one of the last remaining Miwok ceremonial roundhouses in California, standing as a powerful connection to the Southern Sierra Miwok people who have called this region home for thousands of years. Nestled in the small community of Ahwahnee in Madera County, this 27-acre park offers visitors something rare — a chance to engage with living Native American heritage rather than simply reading about it.
The centerpiece is the reconstructed roundhouse itself, a traditional semi-subterranean structure still used for ceremonial gatherings by local Miwok descendants. The surrounding grounds feature shaded oak woodlands with interpretive trails that explain Miwok lifeways, including acorn processing, basket weaving, and the cultural significance of the plants and animals found here. Grinding rocks with deep mortar holes dot the landscape, worn smooth by generations of use.
This is a day-use park — no camping is available on-site — but its location just south of Yosemite National Park makes it an easy and meaningful stop when exploring the Sierra Nevada foothills. Spring brings wildflowers beneath the oaks, while autumn offers golden light and comfortable temperatures ideal for walking the grounds.
Plan for about an hour to explore thoroughly. The park is small and quiet, which is part of its appeal — visitors consistently rate it highly (4.5 out of 5 stars) for its peaceful atmosphere and cultural depth. If you’re passing through the Ahwahnee area, Wassama Round House offers a perspective on California’s history that most travelers never encounter.
