Torreya State Park

Torreya State Park

Bristol, Florida (Liberty County)

4.6 (765 reviews)

Torreya State Park sits along the bluffs of the Apalachicola River in Bristol, Florida, offering some of the most dramatic terrain you’ll find anywhere in the state. Established in 1935, this 13,737-acre park is named for the extremely rare Florida torreya tree, found naturally only in this small corner of Liberty County. The steep ravines, hardwood forests, and river bluffs here feel more like the Appalachian foothills than the Florida most visitors imagine.

The park’s centerpiece is the Gregory House, a restored 1849 plantation home perched on a high bluff overlooking the river. Hikers will find roughly 16 miles of trails, including a section of the Florida National Scenic Trail that winds through forests of magnolia, spruce pine, and American beech. The Weeping Ridge Trail delivers striking views of the Apalachicola River valley below. Birdwatchers, wildflower enthusiasts, and photographers will find plenty to keep them busy across the park’s varied ecosystems.

Camping options include a developed campground with electric and water hookups, as well as primitive backpacking sites along the longer trails for those looking to spend a night deep in the forest.

Late fall through early spring is the sweet spot for visiting — cooler temperatures make the hilly trails far more enjoyable, and the fall color display rivals anything in north Florida. Summers bring heat, humidity, and mosquitoes in full force.

With a 4.6-star rating across 765 reviews, Torreya consistently ranks among Florida’s most beloved — and most underrated — state parks.
