Tomo-Kahni State Historic Park preserves 560 acres of sacred Kawaiisu (Nuwä) Native American land in the wind-swept hills above Tehachapi in Kern County, California. The park’s name means “winter village” in the Kawaiisu language, and the site served as a seasonal settlement for centuries before European contact. What remains today is one of the most culturally significant archaeological sites in the southern Sierra Nevada.

Unlike most state parks, Tomo-Kahni is accessible only through guided tours led by trained docents, typically offered on select Saturdays from October through June. This limited-access model protects the fragile rock shelters, bedrock mortars, and pictograph panels scattered across the landscape. Visitors should book tours in advance through the Tehachapi Museum, as group sizes are small and spots fill quickly.

The guided hikes cover roughly three miles of moderate terrain through rolling grasslands and oak-studded hillsides, with stops at key archaeological features along the way. Docents share the history of the Kawaiisu people and point out grinding rocks, obsidian flakes, and other artifacts in their original locations. The elevation sits around 5,000 feet, offering sweeping views of the Tehachapi Valley and surrounding mountains.

There is no camping within the park, and no facilities or water are available on-site. Visitors should bring sturdy shoes, sun protection, and plenty of water. Spring tours are particularly rewarding when wildflowers blanket the hillsides.
