Tishomingo State Park

Tucked into the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains in northeast Mississippi, Tishomingo State Park stands apart from anything else in the state. While most of Mississippi is defined by flat Delta land and pine forests, Tishomingo delivers dramatic rock formations, moss-covered outcroppings, and a rugged landscape shaped by 300-million-year-old geology. It’s one of the most visually striking parks in the Deep South.

The park sits along Bear Creek, which cuts through massive boulders and creates a scenic corridor perfect for canoeing and kayaking. A swinging bridge over the creek is one of the park’s most photographed features. Hikers can explore trails that wind through fern-filled crevices and past rock walls — the Bear Creek Outcropping Trail is a must-do for anyone visiting.

Camping options include developed sites with water and electric hookups as well as more primitive spots for those who prefer a quieter experience. Cabins built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s are available for rental and carry real historic charm with their native stone construction.

Beyond hiking and paddling, the park offers disc golf, fishing, picnicking, and a seasonal swimming area. Wildflower season in spring brings vibrant color to the rocky terrain, making April and May particularly rewarding months to visit. Fall color peaks in late October.
