Thomas Hart Benton Home and Studio State Historic Site

Step inside the world of one of America’s most influential painters at the Thomas Hart Benton Home and Studio, tucked into a quiet residential neighborhood in Kansas City’s Roanoke district. This compact 0.32-acre state historic site preserves the limestone Victorian home where Thomas Hart Benton lived and worked from 1939 until his death in 1975 — he was literally found here, collapsed in his studio after signing his final mural.

The real draw is Benton’s detached carriage house studio, left remarkably intact. His easel still stands where he positioned it, brushes and pigments sit on the worktable, and an unfinished painting rests as if he just stepped away. It’s an unusually intimate look at an artist’s creative process — far more personal than any gallery experience. The main house, furnished with the family’s original belongings, reflects the unpretentious lifestyle Benton maintained even at the height of his fame as the leader of the American Regionalist movement.
