Tucked into the western shore of Prince William Sound, Surprise Cove State Marine Park offers one of Alaska’s most intimate coastal experiences. This sheltered inlet sits surrounded by steep, forested hillsides that drop dramatically into calm, deep-green waters — a natural harbor that has drawn kayakers, boaters, and wildlife watchers for decades.

The cove’s protected geography makes it a reliable anchorage even when Prince William Sound’s notorious weather kicks up. Boaters will find good holding ground in the inner cove, while kayakers can explore the rocky shoreline, tidal pools, and nearby passages that connect to the broader Sound. Keep your eyes on the water — harbor seals, sea otters, and occasionally humpback whales pass through these channels. Bald eagles nest in the old-growth Sitka spruce above.

Shore access is limited to what you can reach by water. There are no developed facilities, no docks, and no maintained trails — this is backcountry marine Alaska. Camping is primitive and undeveloped; flat ground near the shore is scarce, so plan accordingly and pack everything out. Fresh water is not guaranteed.

The best window to visit runs from late May through early September, when daylight stretches past 10 p.m. and water conditions are most forgiving. July and August bring the warmest temperatures, though “warm” here means low 60s on a good day.
