South Mountains State Park rises from the foothills of Burke County, North Carolina, offering nearly 21,000 acres of rugged terrain that feels far more remote than its location suggests. Established in 1978, this park protects one of the largest tracts of wild land in the piedmont-to-mountain transition zone, where steep ridges climb to 3,000 feet and creeks cut through deep, forested valleys.

The star attraction is the 80-foot High Shoals Falls, reached via a moderate 2.7-mile loop trail that descends through hardwood forest to the base of the cascade. Beyond that signature hike, the park maintains over 40 miles of trails open to hikers, mountain bikers, and equestrians — including challenging climbs along the park’s namesake ridge that reward with long views across the Carolina piedmont.

Fishing for trout in Jacob Fork River draws anglers year-round, and the park’s backcountry campsites offer genuine solitude for overnight trips. A developed campground with individual sites is also available for those who prefer car camping with amenities.

Spring brings wildflower displays along the lower trails and reliable waterfall flow from seasonal rains. Fall delivers some of the best leaf color in the western foothills, typically peaking in late October. Summer can be hot and humid at lower elevations, but the shaded creek corridors stay comfortable.

Expect well-maintained trails with real elevation change — this isn’t a flat piedmont park. Bring sturdy footwear, carry water, and plan for a full day if you’re tackling the longer ridge routes.
