Skyway Fishing Pier State Park

Skyway Fishing Pier State Park offers one of the most unique fishing experiences in the United States. Built on the remnants of the original Sunshine Skyway Bridge, the park features the world’s longest fishing pier — stretching over a mile into Tampa Bay from both the north and south approaches. Since opening in 1994, it has drawn anglers and visitors who come for the exceptional saltwater fishing and the sweeping views of Tampa Bay, the Gulf of Mexico, and the iconic cable-stayed Sunshine Skyway Bridge.

The fishing here is the main event. The pier’s deep-water access puts anglers over productive structure where snook, tarpon, grouper, mackerel, and sheepshead are regular catches depending on the season. Bait shops at each pier entrance sell tackle, bait, and snacks, so you can show up without gear and still have a productive day. A Florida fishing license is not required on the pier itself — it’s covered by the park’s entrance fee.

Beyond fishing, the park is worth visiting just for the panoramic views. Dolphins are frequently spotted, and the sunsets from this vantage point over open water are among the best on Florida’s Gulf Coast. Pelicans and other seabirds are constant companions.

The park sits in Hillsborough and Manatee Counties near St. Petersburg. There is no camping on-site. Visit during the cooler months from October through April for the most comfortable conditions and strong fall fishing runs. Arrive early on weekends — the pier fills up fast.
