Sangchris Lake State Recreation Area
Rochester, Illinois (Christian, Sangamon County)
Sangchris Lake State Recreation Area sprawls across 3,022 acres of central Illinois countryside near Rochester, straddling Christian and Sangamon counties. Built around the cooling lake for a nearby power plant, Sangchris Lake has drawn anglers and outdoor enthusiasts since its establishment in 1964—and with a 4.6-star rating from nearly 800 visitors, it consistently delivers.
The real draw here is the fishing. The warm-water discharge from the power plant creates unusually productive conditions, making Sangchris one of the best largemouth bass lakes in Illinois. Channel catfish, crappie, and bluegill round out the catch. Two boat ramps provide easy lake access, and bank fishing spots are plentiful along the 14-mile shoreline.
Beyond the water, the recreation area offers solid hiking across rolling terrain with prairie grasses and scattered timber. Horseback riding trails wind through the property, and hunters take advantage of designated areas during dove, pheasant, and deer seasons. Picnic areas with shelters dot the grounds, making it a reliable spot for family gatherings.
Spring and fall are the sweet spots for visiting—comfortable temperatures, fewer crowds, and excellent fishing conditions. Summer weekends bring heavier boat traffic but also the best swimming weather. Winter draws a quieter crowd of hardy anglers chasing the warm-water bite.
Expect a well-maintained but no-frills Illinois state property. The landscape is gentle and open, the facilities are clean, and the lake is the centerpiece of everything. If you’re anywhere near Springfield, Sangchris is worth the short drive south.
