Salt Fork State Park is Ohio’s largest state park, sprawling across more than 20,000 acres of rolling hills and dense hardwood forests in Guernsey County. The park wraps around Salt Fork Lake, a 2,952-acre reservoir that anchors nearly every activity here — from bass and muskie fishing to swimming at the sandy beach to paddling quiet coves by kayak.

What makes Salt Fork stand out is its sheer scale. With over 14 miles of hiking trails winding through Appalachian foothills, you can walk for hours without retracing your steps. The Kennedy Stone House Trail leads to a preserved 19th-century homestead, while the longer Hosak’s Cave Trail delivers a genuine sandstone rock shelter that’s worth the effort. Birders and wildlife watchers will find white-tailed deer, wild turkey, and red-tailed hawks throughout the park, particularly along the quieter eastern trails at dawn.

Salt Fork also happens to be one of Ohio’s best-equipped parks for overnight stays. The lodge offers 148 rooms with lake views, and there are over 200 campsites ranging from full-hookup RV spots to more secluded primitive sites tucked into the woods. Cabin rentals fill up fast in summer, so book early.

The best time to visit is late September through mid-October, when the hardwoods erupt in color and the summer crowds thin out. Spring wildflower season in April and May is a quieter alternative. Either way, Salt Fork rewards visitors who come ready to explore — there’s simply more ground to cover here than anywhere else in the Ohio state park system.
