Prophetstown State Park
West Lafayette, Indiana (Tippecanoe County)
Prophetstown State Park sits along the Wabash River just south of West Lafayette, offering 2,000 acres where Indiana’s tallgrass prairie heritage comes alive. Established in 2004, this is one of Indiana’s newer state parks — and one of its most distinctive, blending natural restoration with living history in a way few parks attempt.
The centerpiece is a recreated 1920s working farm at the Farm at Prophetstown, where visitors can watch heritage-breed animals, explore historic buildings, and see traditional farming methods in action. Beyond the farm, miles of trails wind through restored tallgrass prairie, wetlands, and woodlands. The prairie blooms are spectacular from late June through September, when big bluestem grass towers overhead and wildflowers paint the landscape in waves of gold, purple, and white.
Birdwatching is excellent here — the prairie and wetland habitats attract species uncommon elsewhere in the region. Hiking and cycling trails are well-maintained and mostly flat, making them accessible for families. In winter, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing take over the trail system.
The park’s aquatic center, open in summer, is a popular draw for families with younger kids.
With a 4.7-star rating across more than 2,000 reviews, Prophetstown consistently earns praise for its clean facilities, friendly staff, and uncrowded feel. Late spring through early fall is the sweet spot for visiting — you’ll catch the prairie at its most dramatic and have full access to the farm and water features. It’s an easy side trip from Purdue University, just minutes north.
