Prairie Rose State Park sits on 661 acres of rolling hills and tallgrass prairie in Shelby County, just south of Harlan in western Iowa. Named for Iowa’s state flower, this park preserves a pocket of the grassland landscape that once blanketed the region — a rarity in a state where more than 99% of native prairie has been converted to farmland.

The centerpiece is Prairie Rose Lake, a 218-acre reservoir popular with anglers chasing largemouth bass, bluegill, channel catfish, and crappie. A fishing jetty and boat ramp make lake access easy, though electric motors only are permitted, keeping the water calm and quiet. The lake also draws swimmers to its sandy beach during summer months.

Hikers and wildlife watchers will find roughly 5 miles of trails winding through restored prairie, wooded ravines, and along the lakeshore. The campground offers both electric and non-electric sites, many with lake views and good shade. A modern shower building serves the area. Sites fill quickly on summer weekends, so reservations through the Iowa DNR are recommended.
