Pammel State Park sits along the Middle River in Winterset, the seat of Madison County made famous by its iconic covered bridges. The park’s defining feature is a dramatic limestone ravine carved by centuries of water flow, creating shaded gorges and rock formations that feel worlds apart from Iowa’s typical rolling farmland.

The Middle River winds through the heart of the park, offering quiet spots for fishing smallmouth bass and channel catfish. Hiking trails follow the river bluffs and descend into the ravine, where ferns cling to mossy limestone walls and the temperature drops noticeably on summer afternoons. The Backbone Trail traces a narrow ridge between two deep ravines and delivers some of the most striking geology in southern Iowa.

Pammel makes a natural companion to exploring Madison County’s six remaining covered bridges, including the nearby Holliwell Bridge — the longest of the group. Winterset is also the birthplace of John Wayne, and the museum downtown pairs well with a day outdoors.

Picnic shelters dot the park’s upper areas with views into the river valley. The open shelter house, built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s, is worth a stop on its own for the native stone craftsmanship.

Spring brings wildflower displays along the ravine floor, while fall colors peak in mid-October when the hardwood canopy lights up the limestone walls. Summer weekends draw steady crowds, so arriving early secures the best picnic spots. Winter offers solitude and stark views of the exposed rock formations.
