McGee Creek State Park

Tucked into the rugged hills of Atoka County in southeastern Oklahoma, McGee Creek State Park sprawls across 2,600 acres of some of the most untouched wilderness in the state. The park borders the McGee Creek Natural Scenic Recreation Area, a rare 8,900-acre tract where no vehicles or development are permitted — making this one of the few places in Oklahoma where you can experience true backcountry solitude.

The park sits along the shores of McGee Creek Reservoir, a clear-water lake fed by the creek winding through the Ouachita Mountain foothills. Fishing here rewards patience with largemouth bass, channel catfish, and crappie. The lake’s quieter coves are ideal for kayaking, and a boat ramp provides easy access for larger watercraft.

Hikers will find over 25 miles of trails ranging from easy lakeside loops to challenging backcountry routes through dense hardwood forest. Wildlife sightings are common — white-tailed deer, wild turkey, and the occasional bald eagle overhead. Horseback riding trails wind through the scenic recreation area for those looking to cover more ground.

The park offers both RV-friendly campsites and more primitive options for those who prefer fewer amenities and more stars. Several sites sit right along the water’s edge.
