Lumber River State Park follows the winding course of one of North Carolina’s most pristine waterways — the Lumber River, one of only two naturally flowing rivers in the state to earn National Wild and Scenic River designation. Stretching across Robeson, Hoke, and Scotland counties, this park protects a blackwater river corridor draped in towering bald cypress and tupelo gum trees, creating a landscape that feels wonderfully untouched.

Paddling is the main draw here. The Lumber River’s gentle, tea-colored current makes it ideal for canoes and kayaks, with several put-in points along the park’s dispersed sections. Expect to glide beneath canopies of Spanish moss, past sandbars perfect for a midday break, and alongside turtles sunning on fallen logs. Fishing is equally rewarding — largemouth bass, catfish, and bream populate these waters year-round.

On land, hiking trails wind through bottomland hardwood forests where white-tailed deer, wild turkey, and the occasional river otter make appearances. Birdwatchers will find the riparian habitat particularly rich, especially during spring and fall migrations.

The park offers riverside campsites accessible by water, adding an element of adventure that car-camping can’t match. Paddle-in camping here feels genuinely remote despite being a short drive from Lumberton.

The best time to visit is April through June, when water levels are favorable and wildflowers line the banks, or October when fall color reflects off the dark water. Summers can be hot and buggy, but early morning paddles remain magical.
