The Lower Chatanika River State Recreation Area stretches along one of Interior Alaska’s most accessible and rewarding waterways, just 30 miles northeast of Fairbanks off the Steese Highway. This recreation area serves as a gateway to the Chatanika River, a Class I-II waterway popular with canoeists and kayakers looking for a manageable multi-day float through boreal forest and rolling hills.

The best window for visiting runs from late May through mid-September, when the river is ice-free and daylight stretches well past midnight during peak summer. Fall brings spectacular yellow birch along the river corridor and fewer mosquitoes — a genuine plus in Interior Alaska.
