Little Moose Public Reserved Land stretches across more than 15,000 acres of remote Piscataquis County wilderness in Maine’s North Woods region. Tucked between Moosehead Lake and the Appalachian Trail corridor, this state-managed parcel offers a genuine backcountry experience without the crowds found at nearby Baxter State Park.

The landscape is classic northern Maine — dense spruce-fir forest, glacier-carved ponds, and rocky ridgelines that open up to sweeping views of the surrounding mountains and lake country. Little Moose Mountain itself tops out at around 1,980 feet, and the hike to its summit rewards with panoramic views of Moosehead Lake, Big Moose Mountain, and the Boundary Mountains stretching toward Quebec.

Paddlers will find quiet water on Indian Pond and several smaller backcountry ponds scattered throughout the reserve. Fishing for brook trout in these cold, clear waters is a draw from ice-out through early fall. Moose sightings are common here — this is their territory, and early morning visitors along wetland edges will likely spot one.

Hunting is popular in autumn, and snowmobiling and cross-country skiing take over once snow blankets the trails in winter. The network of logging roads and footpaths provides access for mountain biking and hiking during warmer months.

Best time to visit: Late June through September for hiking and paddling, though September and early October bring spectacular foliage with far fewer bugs. Come prepared for black flies in June — they’re relentless.
