Little Missouri State Park sits on nearly 6,500 acres of rugged badlands terrain in Dunn County, North Dakota, offering one of the state’s most dramatic and undervisited landscapes. The park follows the winding Little Missouri River, where centuries of erosion have carved deep coulees, flat-topped buttes, and jagged ridgelines into the clay and sandstone earth.

This is a park built for exploration. Over 75 miles of trails wind through the backcountry, open to hiking, horseback riding, and mountain biking. The terrain is demanding — steep climbs, loose scree, and unmarked junctions reward those who come prepared with maps and sturdy boots. Riders will find designated horse camping areas and corrals, making this one of the best equestrian destinations in the Northern Plains.

Wildlife is abundant. Mule deer, pronghorn, coyotes, and sharp-tailed grouse move through the draws and grasslands. Birdwatchers should watch for golden eagles soaring above the ridgelines, especially during spring migration.

The park offers primitive camping with vault toilets and limited amenities — no hookups, no showers. Bring your own water and pack out what you bring in. That simplicity is part of the appeal: few crowds, dark skies, and genuine solitude.

Late May through early October is the best window for visiting. Spring brings wildflowers and green coulees; fall delivers golden cottonwoods along the river and cooler temperatures for long rides. Summers can be hot and exposed, so start early and carry plenty of water.
