Lake Hartwell State Park
South Carolina (Oconee County)
About This Park
This recreation area is part of Hartwell Lake
Lake Hartwell State Park sits on the western edge of Oconee County, South Carolina, where 680 acres of rolling Piedmont terrain meet the expansive shoreline of Lake Hartwell — a 56,000-acre reservoir straddling the South Carolina-Georgia border. The park offers direct access to one of the Southeast’s most popular lakes, making it a natural base camp for boating, fishing, and water sports.
Anglers come for the largemouth bass, striped bass, and crappie that thrive in Hartwell’s deep, clear waters. A public boat ramp puts you on the lake quickly, and the coves near the park tend to be quieter than the main channel. On land, hiking trails wind through mixed hardwood and pine forests, where you’re likely to spot white-tailed deer, wild turkey, and the occasional great blue heron stalking the shallows.
The park’s campground includes both tent and RV sites, many with lake views and full hookups. Reserving ahead is smart — waterfront sites fill fast during summer weekends. For day visitors, a swimming area with a sandy beach provides a welcome cooldown from June through August.
Spring and fall are the sweet spots for visiting. Temperatures hover in the 60s and 70s, the lake is less crowded, and fall foliage reflects beautifully off the water. Summer brings peak activity and warmer water for swimming, but expect company.
Lake Hartwell State Park delivers on the basics — lake access, good fishing, solid camping — without the chaos of more commercialized recreation areas nearby.
