Kings Mountain State Park sits on nearly 6,900 acres of rolling Piedmont forest in York County, just outside the town of Cherokee, South Carolina. Bordering the Kings Mountain National Military Park — site of a pivotal Revolutionary War battle — this state park pairs deep American history with some of the best outdoor recreation in the Carolina Piedmont.

The park’s trail system is the main draw. Over 16 miles of hiking and mountain biking trails wind through hardwood forests and along rocky creeks, with routes ranging from easy lakeside strolls to more challenging ridge loops. The 65-acre Lake Crawford anchors the park’s eastern side, offering bank fishing for bass, bream, and catfish, along with a small boat ramp for canoes and johnboats (no gas motors allowed).

Camping options give visitors a reason to stay. The park features more than 100 campsites spread across wooded loops, including tent sites, full-hookup RV spots, and a handful of rustic cabins. A recreated 19th-century farmstead — the Living History Farm — adds a unique element, with interpreters demonstrating blacksmithing, candle-making, and other period skills during scheduled events.

Fall is the sweet spot for visiting. October brings crisp air, peak foliage across the Piedmont hills, and thinner crowds than the summer months. Spring wildflower season (late March through April) is a close second.

Expect a park that feels larger and quieter than its proximity to Charlotte (about 45 minutes north) would suggest — a genuine stretch of Southern woodland with room to breathe.
