Kickapoo State Recreation Area

Tucked into the wooded ravines of Vermilion County near Oakwood, Illinois, Kickapoo State Recreation Area spans 2,842 acres of terrain unlike anything else in the state. Established in 1939 on land once stripped for coal mining, the park has transformed into a striking landscape where deep canyons, crystal-clear ponds, and dense hardwood forests have reclaimed former mining sites. That history gives Kickapoo a rugged, almost Appalachian character rare in central Illinois.

The park is best known for its extensive trail system. Over 20 miles of paths wind through forested ravines and along the Middle Fork of the Vermilion River — Illinois’ only National Scenic River. Mountain biking is excellent here, with technical singletrack that draws riders from across the Midwest. Hikers will find trails ranging from easy loops around the old strip ponds to challenging ravine crossings. Canoeing and kayaking on the Middle Fork offer a quieter way to experience the park, particularly during spring when water levels are ideal.

Fishing is productive in the numerous small ponds scattered throughout the property, stocked with bass and bluegill. Hunting is permitted in designated areas during season.

Spring and fall are the best times to visit — wildflowers carpet the forest floor in April and May, while autumn color in the ravines is outstanding. Summers are warm and humid but perfectly swimmable.
