Kerr Lake State Recreation Area sits along the shores of John H. Kerr Reservoir, a 50,000-acre lake straddling the North Carolina–Virginia border in the rolling Piedmont region. Established in 1952 after the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers dammed the Roanoke River, the recreation area spans multiple access points across Vance, Warren, and Granville counties, offering over 800 miles of shoreline to explore.

Water is the main draw here. Kerr Lake is one of the largest lakes in the Southeast, and boating, skiing, swimming, and fishing dominate the warmer months. Anglers target largemouth bass, striped bass, crappie, and catfish — the striped bass fishing alone draws people from across the region. Several boat ramps and marinas make lake access easy whether you trailer in or rent on-site.

The recreation area operates seven separate access areas, each with its own character. Satterwhite Point and Henderson Point are the most popular, with developed campgrounds offering tent and RV sites, hot showers, and easy water access. Altogether, there are roughly 700 campsites spread across the park — reservations are smart for summer weekends but midweek availability is usually good.

Beyond the water, miles of trails wind through hardwood forests, and the fall foliage along the lakeshore is quietly spectacular. Spring and fall offer the best balance of mild weather and manageable crowds, though summer is peak season for a reason.
