Headlands Beach State Park sits along the shore of Lake Erie in Lake County, Ohio, home to the longest natural sand beach in the state. The beach itself is the main attraction — a wide, sandy expanse where families spread out blankets, wade into Lake Erie’s freshwater surf, and hunt for beach glass polished smooth by the waves. Swimming is popular from late May through September, though Lake Erie’s water temperature can stay brisk into June. Adjacent to the main beach, the Headlands Dunes State Nature Preserve protects a rare coastal dune ecosystem with boardwalk trails threading through native grasses and wildflowers found nowhere else in Ohio.

Birdwatchers come year-round, as the park sits along a major migration corridor. Spring and fall bring warblers, shorebirds, and raptors in impressive numbers. Fishing from the breakwall produces perch, walleye, and steelhead depending on the season.

There are no camping facilities within the park itself, so plan for a day trip or arrange lodging nearby. Picnic areas with shelters, restrooms, and ample parking make it easy to settle in for a full afternoon.

The best window to visit is mid-June through early September, when water temperatures cooperate and the beach is at its finest. Arrive early on summer weekends — the parking lot fills fast on hot days.
