Green River State Wildlife Area

Tucked into the rolling terrain of Lee County, Green River State Wildlife Area spans 2,565 acres of restored prairie, timber, and wetland habitat that has drawn hunters, anglers, and nature enthusiasts since 1940. The Green River winds through the property, giving the area its name and much of its character — bottomland forests line the banks while upland prairies stretch across the higher ground.

Birders will find this place rewarding. The mix of grassland and wetland habitat supports a strong population of pheasant, quail, and waterfowl, making it one of the better upland game destinations in northern Illinois. Deer hunting is equally popular here, with archery and firearm seasons drawing steady crowds each fall. Outside of hunting season, the area opens up for hiking, wildlife observation, and fishing along the river and several smaller ponds stocked with bass and bluegill.

Spring brings migrating warblers and wildflower blooms across the prairie restorations, while autumn delivers peak foliage along the river corridor — both are ideal times to visit. Summer can be buggy near the bottomlands, so bring repellent if you’re exploring between June and August.

Camping availability is not currently confirmed, so check with the Illinois Department of Natural Resources before planning an overnight trip. Day-use visitors will find ample parking at multiple access points scattered across the property.
