Grahams Island State Park

Nestled on a peninsula jutting into Devils Lake in Ramsey County, Grahams Island State Park offers nearly 960 acres of rolling prairie, wooded coulees, and prime lakefront access on North Dakota’s largest natural body of water. Devils Lake is legendary among anglers for its walleye, white bass, and perch fishing, and the park puts you right at the water’s edge with a well-maintained boat ramp and fish cleaning station.

Beyond fishing, the park’s trail system winds through native grasslands and sheltered groves of bur oak and green ash — habitats that draw white-tailed deer, sharp-tailed grouse, and migrating songbirds throughout the season. Birdwatchers will find the mix of prairie, woodland, and shoreline ecosystems particularly rewarding, especially during spring and fall migrations when pelicans, cormorants, and shorebirds pass through in impressive numbers.

The campground offers both modern and primitive sites, many with views across the lake. Full-hookup spots accommodate RVs, while more secluded tent sites sit tucked among the trees for a quieter experience. A day-use picnic area and swimming beach round out the amenities.

The best time to visit is June through September, when lake temperatures are comfortable for swimming and the walleye bite is at its peak. Early fall brings golden prairie grasses, fewer crowds, and excellent fishing conditions.
