George Washington State Campground
Tucked into the wooded hills of Providence County, George Washington State Campground offers a quiet retreat just a short drive from Rhode Island’s urban centers. Spread across 100 acres of mixed hardwood and pine forest, the campground sits within the larger George Washington Management Area — a sprawling expanse of protected land that gives visitors room to roam without the crowds found at coastal destinations.
The campground serves as a base camp for exploring miles of hiking and mountain biking trails that wind through the surrounding management area. Pulaski Trail and the Walkabout Trail loop system are local favorites, offering everything from easy woodland strolls to more challenging terrain with rocky ridgelines and seasonal stream crossings. Anglers will find bass and trout in Bowdish Reservoir, located nearby, where a boat launch provides easy access for kayaks and canoes.
Fall is arguably the best season here — the hardwood canopy puts on a reliable show of color through October, and the cooler temperatures make trail days comfortable. Summer weekends can fill up, so arriving midweek or booking early is worth the effort. Winter visitors will find the trails quieter and well-suited for snowshoeing when conditions allow.
Expect a rustic experience. Sites are wooded and reasonably spaced, offering decent privacy. Facilities are straightforward — don’t come expecting glamping amenities, but do come expecting campfire evenings with minimal light pollution and mornings where birdsong is the loudest thing around.
