Fort Stevenson State Park sits on a peninsula jutting into Lake Sakakawea in McLean County, North Dakota, offering some of the state’s best waterfront recreation across nearly 587 acres. Named for the historic military fort established during the Indian Wars era, the park combines rich history with outstanding outdoor access on one of the largest man-made lakes in the United States.

Lake Sakakawea dominates the experience here. Anglers come for walleye, northern pike, and smallmouth bass, with a full-service marina providing boat rentals, slips, and a fish cleaning station. The park’s swimming beach is a favorite during North Dakota’s warm summers, and the lake’s vast expanse makes it ideal for sailing, kayaking, and waterskiing.

On land, miles of trails wind through native prairie and wooded coulees, suitable for hiking and mountain biking in summer and cross-country skiing in winter. The park also operates a disc golf course and hosts the annual Frontier Military Days living history event, where reenactors bring the original fort’s story to life.

Camping options range from modern full-hookup RV sites to more secluded tent pads, many with lake views. Two cabin rentals provide a roof for those who prefer it. Reservations are recommended for peak summer weekends.

The best time to visit is June through September, when the lake is warm enough for swimming and the fishing peaks. Spring and fall bring fewer crowds and excellent birding along the Central Flyway.
