Fort Ransom State Park

Tucked into the wooded Sheyenne River Valley in Ransom County, Fort Ransom State Park offers nearly 934 acres of rolling terrain that feels unlike anywhere else in North Dakota. Where the Great Plains give way to oak-studded hills, this park delivers a landscape of surprising variety — steep ravines, wildflower-covered bluffs, and dense hardwood forest that blazes with color each autumn.

The park sits near the site of a military fort established during the Dakota conflicts of the 1860s, and that layered history adds depth to every trail. Hiking is the main draw, with paths winding through both upland prairie and river-bottom woodland. The Sheyenne River itself offers quiet paddling, and birders will find the mix of grassland and forest habitats productive for warblers, wild turkeys, and sharp-tailed grouse.
