Fort Defiance State Park

Perched at the confluence of the Des Moines and East Fork Des Moines Rivers in Estherville, Fort Defiance State Park spans 221 acres of rolling terrain shaped by Iowa’s frontier history. The park takes its name from a stockade built here during the Spirit Lake Massacre of 1857, when settlers fortified this natural high ground above the river junction. The trail system winds through mature oak and hickory stands before dropping down to river-level paths where anglers cast for channel catfish and smallmouth bass.
