Fishers Peak State Park

Rising dramatically above the high plains of southern Colorado, Fishers Peak State Park protects nearly 19,200 acres of wild mesa country just outside Trinidad in Las Animas County. The park’s centerpiece is Fishers Peak itself — a flat-topped mountain reaching 9,633 feet that has served as a landmark for travelers along the Santa Fe Trail for centuries. Once the largest privately held parcel in Colorado, this land opened to the public as a state park, preserving one of the most ecologically diverse landscapes on the Front Range.

The terrain shifts from shortgrass prairie at its base through piñon-juniper woodlands and Gambel oak thickets up to subalpine meadows near the summit. Wildlife is abundant — mule deer, black bear, wild turkey, and elk all call the mesa home, and birders regularly spot golden eagles riding thermals along the cliff faces.

Hiking is the primary draw, with trails winding through canyons and along ridgelines that offer sweeping views of the Spanish Peaks, Sangre de Cristo Range, and the vast Raton Mesa complex stretching into New Mexico. The park is still developing its trail system and visitor infrastructure, so check current access conditions before planning your trip.

Late spring through early fall offers the best visiting window, with wildflower displays peaking in June and July. Summer afternoons bring reliable thunderstorms, so plan to start hikes early. Trinidad, just minutes away, provides dining, fuel, and lodging — making Fishers Peak an easy base-camp destination for exploring Colorado’s underappreciated southern frontier.
