Dworshak State Park sits on the western shores of Dworshak Reservoir in the rugged hills of Clearwater County, just outside Lenore, Idaho. Spanning 850 acres of dense conifer forest, the park offers one of north-central Idaho’s best combinations of waterfront recreation and wooded seclusion — without the crowds you’d find at more well-known destinations.

The reservoir itself is the draw. Stretching 54 miles with over 180 miles of shoreline, Dworshak is one of the largest man-made lakes in the Western United States, backed by Dworshak Dam on the North Fork Clearwater River. The water stays cold and remarkably clear, making it a favorite for swimming, fishing, and boating. Anglers target smallmouth bass, kokanee salmon, and rainbow trout, while the park’s boat ramp provides easy access to the reservoir’s quieter coves.

On land, hiking trails wind through stands of ponderosa pine and Douglas fir, with glimpses of the reservoir through the trees. Wildlife sightings — white-tailed deer, osprey, bald eagles — are common, especially in the early morning. The park also maintains a disc golf course, volleyball courts, and horseshoe pits for more relaxed afternoons.

Camping options include both standard and electric hookup sites nestled among the trees, plus a group camp area for larger parties. Sites fill up on summer weekends, so reservations are worth planning ahead.

The best window runs from late June through early September, when the reservoir levels are highest and daytime temperatures sit comfortably in the 80s. Spring and fall bring cooler weather and near-empty trails.
