Deer Lake State Park
Tucked along the Emerald Coast in Santa Rosa Beach, Deer Lake State Park offers nearly 2,000 acres of coastal wilderness that feels worlds away from the busy beach towns nearby. Established in 1996, this Walton County gem protects one of the last remaining coastal dune lakes in the world — a rare geological feature found in only a handful of places on Earth.
The park’s centerpiece is Deer Lake itself, a brackish coastal dune lake that periodically breaks through the sand dunes to connect with the Gulf of Mexico. A boardwalk trail winds through scrubby flatwoods and over towering sand dunes before delivering you to a stretch of sugar-white beach that rarely draws crowds. The contrast between the quiet lake, the windswept dunes, and the turquoise Gulf water makes this one of the most scenic short hikes on Florida’s Panhandle.
Visitors come for hiking, birding, wildlife photography, swimming, and beach access without the resort-town atmosphere. The half-mile boardwalk to the beach is the main draw, but the park’s interior trails through native scrub habitat reward patient explorers with sightings of gopher tortoises, shorebirds, and native wildflowers.
There are no campgrounds within the park, so plan this as a day trip. The best time to visit is late spring through early fall when the dune lake outfall is most active, though mild winters make year-round visits comfortable. Arrive early on summer weekends — the small parking area fills fast.
