Cowans Gap State Park
Pennsylvania (Franklin and Fulton Counties County)
Tucked into the folds of Tuscarora Mountain along the border of Franklin and Fulton Counties, Cowans Gap State Park spans 1,085 acres of forested Appalachian terrain that has drawn visitors since its establishment in 1937. The park’s centerpiece is the 42-acre Cowans Gap Lake, a quiet body of water ringed by hemlock and hardwood forest that feels remarkably secluded despite sitting just off Route 75.
Swimming is the main summer draw, with a sandy guarded beach that stays manageable even on busy weekends. The lake also supports non-powered boating and solid warm-water fishing for bass, bluegill, and catfish. Hikers will find roughly 10 miles of trails ranging from easy lakeside loops to steeper climbs along Tuscarora Mountain, where rocky outcrops open up to long views of the surrounding ridges and valleys.
Winter brings cross-country skiing and ice fishing when conditions cooperate, making this a genuine four-season destination. The surrounding state forest land expands trail options considerably for those willing to explore beyond park boundaries.
Fall is arguably the best time to visit. The mixed hardwood canopy puts on a vivid show from mid-October into early November, and the summer crowds thin out enough that you can have entire trail sections to yourself.
The park sits in a relatively undeveloped stretch of south-central Pennsylvania, so plan accordingly — pack what you need, as services are limited nearby. That remoteness is also exactly what makes Cowans Gap worth the trip.
