Couchville Cedar Glade State Natural Area
Tennessee (Davidson, Wilson County)
Couchville Cedar Glade State Natural Area protects 140 acres of one of Tennessee’s rarest ecosystems — cedar glades, limestone barrens found almost exclusively in the Central Basin. Spanning Davidson and Wilson counties just southeast of Nashville, this quiet preserve shelters plant species that grow nowhere else on Earth, including several federally listed endemics adapted to the thin, rocky soils and seasonal extremes of these open glades.
What makes Couchville special is its accessibility. A paved, ADA-compliant loop trail winds through the heart of the glade, making this fragile habitat easy to explore without straying off-path and damaging the delicate crust. Interpretive signs along the route explain the geology and botany, turning a short walk into an education on why cedar glades matter. A longer unpaved trail extends deeper into the woods for those wanting more mileage.
Spring is the prime season to visit, roughly late April through early June, when the glade wildflowers — Tennessee coneflower, glade cress, and limestone fame-flower — put on their best show against the exposed rock. Fall brings subtle color and cooler temperatures for comfortable hiking. Summers can be brutally hot on the open limestone with little shade.
There are no camping facilities on-site, and the area is day-use only. No restrooms or water are available, so come prepared. Long Hunter State Park sits adjacent and offers picnicking, lake access, and additional trails if you want to extend your outing.
Expect a peaceful, understated experience — this is a place for observation, not adventure sports.
