Clinton Lake State Recreation Area sits on the shores of Clinton Lake in DeWitt County, Illinois, offering 9,300 acres of rolling prairie, wooded bluffs, and open water just south of the small town of De Witt. Established in 1978 alongside the creation of Clinton Lake itself — a cooling reservoir for the nearby power plant — the recreation area has grown into one of central Illinois’ most popular outdoor destinations, earning a strong 4.6 rating from nearly 1,500 visitors.

The lake is the main draw. At roughly 4,900 surface acres, Clinton Lake delivers excellent fishing for largemouth bass, channel catfish, crappie, and walleye. Boaters have plenty of room to spread out, and several launch ramps make access easy whether you’re towing a pontoon or dropping in a kayak. Shoreline anglers will find productive spots along the dam and in the quieter coves on the north end.

Beyond the water, the park’s trail system winds through oak-hickory forest and restored tallgrass prairie — ideal for hiking, mountain biking, and wildlife watching. White-tailed deer, wild turkey, and great blue herons are common sights. Hunters can take advantage of designated areas during fall seasons.

Spring and early fall are the sweet spots for visiting — comfortable temperatures, fewer crowds, and peak fishing conditions. Summers bring heavier boat traffic but longer days on the water. Winter visitors will find a quieter park well suited to hiking and bald eagle watching near the dam.

Plan for a full day at minimum. There’s more ground here than most people expect.
