Chugach State Park
Anchorage, Alaska (Anchorage area park County)
Chugach State Park sprawls across nearly half a million acres of rugged Alaskan wilderness, making it one of the largest state parks in the United States—and remarkably, it sits right on Anchorage’s doorstep. This accessibility to true backcountry is what sets Chugach apart: residents can leave downtown and reach alpine tundra within 30 minutes.
The park’s landscape ranges from coastal rainforest along Turnagain Arm to glacially carved valleys and peaks exceeding 8,000 feet. Flattop Mountain remains the most-climbed peak in Alaska, offering panoramic views of the city, Cook Inlet, and Denali on clear days. For more solitude, trails like Crow Pass and the Eklutna Traverse deliver multi-day adventures through pristine wilderness.
Wildlife viewing is exceptional. Dall sheep dot the high ridges, moose browse willow thickets in the valleys, and black and brown bears roam throughout—hikers should carry bear spray and know proper food storage. Eagle River Nature Center provides an accessible introduction to the ecosystem with ranger programs and easier trails.
The park offers backcountry camping throughout, with designated sites at Eklutna Lake and several public-use cabins available by reservation. Summer months (June through August) bring the longest days and warmest weather, ideal for hiking and backpacking. Winter transforms the park into a playground for cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and ice climbing.
With a 4.8-star rating from over 2,500 visitors, Chugach consistently delivers the authentic Alaskan wilderness experience that draws people north.
