Cardigan Mountain State Park
New Hampshire (Grafton County)
Cardigan Mountain State Park rises from the forests of Grafton County, New Hampshire, anchored by the 3,121-foot summit of Cardigan Mountain — one of the most rewarding hikes in the state for the effort required. The bare granite peak offers sweeping 360-degree views across the Lakes Region, the White Mountains, and on clear days, all the way to Vermont’s Green Mountains. At 5,655 acres, the park protects a rich landscape of northern hardwood forest, rocky ridgelines, and mountain streams.
The West Ridge Trail is the most popular route to the summit — a steady 1.5-mile climb that’s manageable for families with older kids and rewarding enough for experienced hikers. For a longer outing, the Clark Trail loops through old-growth stands and past the historic Cardigan Lodge, operated by the Appalachian Mountain Club. In winter, the trails draw snowshoers and backcountry enthusiasts looking for a quieter alternative to the Whites.
The park’s base area includes picnic facilities and a small swimming beach on a mountain pond, making it a solid day-trip destination even if you skip the summit. Blueberry picking along the upper ridges in late July and August is a local favorite.
Summer and early fall are the prime seasons — July through mid-October brings the best weather and the most dramatic foliage views from the summit. Spring trails can be muddy and are often closed during mud season (April–May) to prevent erosion. Arrive early on autumn weekends, as parking fills quickly during peak leaf-peeping season.
