Cambria State Marine Conservation Area

Tucked along the rugged San Luis Obispo County coastline near the charming village of Cambria, this state marine conservation area protects a stretch of Central California’s richest nearshore waters. Where the cold California Current meets rocky reefs and kelp forests, an extraordinary diversity of marine life thrives just below the surface.

The conservation area encompasses rocky intertidal zones, subtidal reefs, and open water habitats that support sea otters, harbor seals, and migrating gray whales. Tidepooling is one of the most rewarding activities here — low tides reveal anemones, sea stars, hermit crabs, and turban snails clinging to sculpted rock shelves. The kelp canopies visible from shore hint at the underwater ecosystem below, making this a popular spot for kayaking and wildlife observation.

Because this is a marine conservation area, fishing and harvesting restrictions apply — check current California Department of Fish and Wildlife regulations before visiting. Swimming is possible but the water is cold year-round, typically hovering between 50-58°F.

The stretch of coastline near Moonstone Beach offers accessible boardwalk trails with sweeping ocean views, and the town of Cambria provides lodging, dining, and supplies within minutes. No camping exists within the marine area itself, but nearby San Simeon State Park offers tent and RV sites just a short drive north.

Visit between December and April for whale watching, or time a summer trip around minus tides for the best tidepooling. Fog is common mornings through midday, often clearing by afternoon.
