Breaks Interstate Park straddles the Kentucky–Virginia border in the rugged Appalachian highlands, protecting 4,600 acres surrounding the deepest canyon east of the Mississippi River. Known as the “Grand Canyon of the South,” the Russell Fork River has carved a gorge five miles long and 1,600 feet deep through Pine Mountain — a landscape that stops first-time visitors in their tracks.
