Border Field State Park sits at the southwestern-most corner of the continental United States, where California meets Mexico and the Pacific Ocean. Spanning 1,316 acres along the Imperial Beach coastline in San Diego County, this state park offers something no other park in America can — you can stand at the international border fence and look directly into Tijuana’s Playas de Tijuana neighborhood while waves crash just yards away.

The park’s centerpiece is Friendship Park, a binational gathering spot where families separated by the border have met for decades. A monument marking the initial survey point of the U.S.-Mexico boundary stands nearby, adding historical weight to an already powerful landscape. Beyond the border experience, the park protects the Tijuana River Estuary, one of the few remaining coastal wetlands in Southern California and a critical stopover for migratory birds along the Pacific Flyway.

Birdwatching here is exceptional — over 370 species have been documented in the estuary. Hiking trails wind through coastal dunes and salt marshes, and horseback riding is permitted on the beach. The flat, open terrain makes for easy walking, though trails can be muddy after rain. Surfing and beachcombing draw visitors to the shoreline, particularly during lower tides.

The best time to visit is late fall through early spring, when migratory birds are most abundant and coastal fog is less persistent. Summer mornings often start overcast but typically clear by midday. Note that vehicle access to the beach is sometimes restricted due to road conditions — check current access before driving in.
