Big Oak Tree State Park preserves one of the last remaining tracts of ancient bottomland hardwood forest in Missouri’s Bootheel region. Spread across 1,028 acres in Mississippi County, this park protects towering oaks, bald cypresses, and other hardwoods that once blanketed the Mississippi River floodplain — trees that largely disappeared as the swamps were drained for agriculture over a century ago.

A raised boardwalk trail winds through the heart of the old-growth forest, keeping visitors above the swampy ground while offering close-up views of massive trees, some exceeding 130 feet tall. The park’s nature center highlights the ecological significance of the bottomland forest and the species that depend on it. Birders come here for excellent sightings of woodpeckers, warblers, and other woodland species that thrive in the dense canopy.

Hiking is the main draw, though the park also offers picnicking areas and interpretive programs. The terrain is flat and the trails are accessible, making this a good stop for families. Camping availability is limited, so check with the park office before planning an overnight stay.

Spring brings wildflowers and migrating birds, while fall delivers rich color from the hardwoods. Summer can be hot and humid — typical for Missouri’s southeastern lowlands — so pack water and insect repellent. Winter visits offer the starkest views of the massive tree trunks and architectural root systems.
