Tucked into the wooded hills of McNairy County in southwest Tennessee, Big Hill Pond State Park spreads across 4,138 acres of dense hardwood forest, cypress-rimmed ponds, and quiet bottomland. The park takes its name from a large pond created in the 1850s when soil was excavated to build a levee for the Memphis-to-Charleston railroad — a piece of infrastructure history still visible in the landscape today.

The centerpiece is Travis McNatt Lake, a 35-acre lake popular with anglers chasing largemouth bass, bluegill, and catfish from the bank or a small boat (electric motors only). Dismal Swamp boardwalk offers one of the most atmospheric short walks in west Tennessee, winding through a tupelo-cypress wetland where herons wade and turtles line every fallen log.

Over 30 miles of trails crisscross the park, shared by hikers, mountain bikers, and horseback riders. The Tuscumbia Trail follows an old rail corridor, while backcountry loops push deeper into ridgeline forest where spring wildflowers carpet the floor in April. A fire tower near the park’s center rewards climbers with panoramic views across the canopy.

Camping options include a developed campground with hookups and a more rustic backcountry site for those wanting solitude. Equestrian camping is also available.

Spring and fall deliver the best conditions — mild temperatures, fewer mosquitoes, and spectacular color in October. Summer brings humidity but also peak fishing. Big Hill Pond rewards visitors who prefer their parks unhurried, uncrowded, and genuinely wild.
