Bear Lake State Park

Bear Lake State Park

St Charles, Idaho (Bear Lake County)

4.6 (335 reviews)

Bear Lake State Park sits on the shores of one of the most striking bodies of water in the American West. Bear Lake—often called the “Caribbean of the Rockies”—spans the IdahoUtah border and gets its intense turquoise color from suspended limestone particles found nowhere else in the region. The park’s 966 acres along the lake’s north and east shores give visitors direct access to this remarkable water.

The lake itself drives most activity here. Swimming is excellent in summer, with sandy beaches at the North Beach unit that rival any mountain lake destination. Boating and jet skiing are hugely popular, and the park maintains boat ramps at both the North Beach and East Beach areas. Anglers come for the Bonneville cisco, a fish found only in Bear Lake—the January cisco run draws ice fishers from across the region. Sailing, paddleboarding, and kayaking round out the water options.

Winter transforms the park into a base camp for snowmobiling across the surrounding Bear Lake Valley, with groomed trails connecting to an extensive network.

The campground at North Beach offers sites close to the water, though it books up fast during July and August. Reservations are essential for summer weekends. East Beach tends to be less crowded and is worth checking if North Beach fills up.

Peak season runs June through August when water temperatures become comfortable for swimming. September brings smaller crowds and golden light across the valley. Spring visitors should expect cold water but excellent fishing conditions.

With a 4.6-star rating across 335 reviews, Bear Lake State Park consistently earns its reputation as one of Idaho’s best lakeside escapes.
