If you’re looking for a scenic spot to camp, hike, bike, or watch wildlife, Talimena State Park in eastern Oklahoma is a great option. This 20-acre park is located at the Oklahoma entrance to Talimena Scenic Drive, just a short drive from Talihina and Wister.
One of the park’s biggest draws is the Ouachita National Recreation Trail, which starts at Talimena State Park and travels over 200 miles through the Ouachita Mountains to Pinnacle Mountain State Park in Arkansas.
Despite the park’s budgetary challenges in recent years, it has remained open and continues to be a popular destination for visitors. In fact, in 2010, the park welcomed over 7,600 visitors and earned $28,400 in activity fees.

Twin Bridges State Park

If you’re looking for a serene and peaceful escape from the hustle of city life, then Twin Bridges State Park is the perfect spot for you.
Located on the north side of Grand Lake o’ the Cherokees in northeastern Oklahoma, the park is renowned for its tranquil country atmosphere and excellent fishing opportunities. The park is named after the two bridges that carry U.S. Highway 60 over arms of the lake that connect to the Neosho River and the Spring River.
The fishing center is a great spot for anglers to stock up on bait and tackle and take advantage of the enclosed fishing dock. In addition to fishing, the park also offers picnic areas, RV and tent campgrounds, snacks, lake huts, playgrounds, volleyball court, and horseshoe pits.
The picnic facilities include individual shelters and group picnic shelters for larger gatherings. If you’re planning on camping, the park offers a range of campsites, from semi-modern RV sites to tent camping, with comfort stations that have showers.
You can also book a one-room lake hut with electricity, ceiling fans, and screened windows, grills, tables, water, and restroom facilities. The park is also home to the Wildlife Department’s Paddlefish Research & Processing Center, which collects important biological data, processes paddlefish meat for anglers, and salvages paddlefish eggs.
The Paddlefish Research & Processing Center is open from February 15 to May 15, so don’t forget to check it out if you’re visiting during that time!
