Point Au Fer Reef Light

Point Au Fer Reef Light stands in the remote waters of Louisiana’s Atchafalaya Basin, where river meets Gulf. Built in 1916, this skeletal tower replaced earlier structures lost to the basin’s notoriously shifting sediments and brutal hurricane seasons. Its iron-pile foundation rises from the shallow reef, still guiding vessels through one of America’s most productive estuaries.
The light remains active but is not open to the public — no climbing allowed. Best photographed from the water during golden hour, when the tower silhouettes against Gulf sunsets. Charter boats from Morgan City offer the closest access.
