Indiana Harbor East Breakwater Light
Standing at the mouth of the Indiana Harbor Canal in Hammond, Indiana, this 51-foot steel tower has guided vessels through one of Lake Michigan’s busiest industrial ports since 1935, replacing an earlier 1920 structure. Its sturdy, no-nonsense design reflects the working-class character of the Calumet Region. The light remains active and is not open to the public — there is no climbing access, and the breakwater itself can be hazardous. Photographers get the best shots at sunrise, when warm light contrasts against the industrial skyline, or during dramatic winter ice formations. Nearby, visitors can explore the Lake Michigan shoreline at Whiting Lakefront Park or the Mascot Hall of Fame.
