Perched on remote Tatoosh Island at the extreme northwest tip of Washington state, Cape Flattery Light has guided mariners since 1857, making it one of the oldest lighthouses on the West Coast. Built to mark the treacherous entrance to the Strait of Juan de Fuca, the station endured brutal storms and isolation throughout its operational life. The light has since been decommissioned and is not open to the public, as Tatoosh Island is part of the Makah Reservation. Visitors can view the lighthouse from the Cape Flattery Trail overlook on the mainland. Late summer offers the best light for photography.
