Cape Decision Light

Standing sentinel on the remote southern tip of Kuiu Island in Alaska’s Inside Passage, Cape Decision Light has guided mariners through treacherous waters since 1932. The art deco–style concrete tower replaced an earlier fog signal station, marking the critical junction where Sumner Strait meets Chatham Strait.
Still an active aid to navigation, the lighthouse is not open to the public, and access requires a boat or floatplane. The rugged isolation is part of its appeal — photographers find the best light during Alaska’s long summer golden hours, from May through August.
Nearby attractions include whale watching in Frederick Sound, the fishing town of Petersburg, and the vast wilderness of Kuiu Island itself.
