Adeline Jay Geo-Karis Illinois Beach State Park is located along the stunning Lake Michigan shoreline in northern Lake County, spanning over 4,000 acres and more than six miles of pristine beachfront.

But there are more natural wonders to discover than the beach – visitors can also explore dune areas, wetlands, prairies, and black oak savannas!

You may also appreciate that the far southern end of the park is a designated nature preserve, which was named a National Natural Landmark in 1980.

Apple River Canyon State Park is a nature lover’s dream come true! Located in Jo Daviess County, Illinois, this state park covers an area of 297 acres and was established back in 1932.

Thanks to the tireless efforts of botanist Herman Silas Pepoon, the state was able to purchase additional land, and today, over 1,900 acres have been preserved to protect the 8.5-mile-long canyon on the Apple River.

The park is a part of the Driftless Area of Illinois, which was left untouched by the last ice age, making it a unique and fascinating place to explore.

There are several hiking trails that offer stunning views of the river and bluffs, and many visitors enjoy hunting and fishing on gorge lands. If you’re lucky, you might even catch a glimpse of smallmouth bass swimming in the river!

Also, if you’re looking for a place to spend the night, the tent campground is the perfect spot to pitch a tent and enjoy the great outdoors.

If you’re looking for a great place to hike and camp in Illinois, Argyle Lake State Park is definitely worth checking out!

This 1,700-acre park in Colchester boasts a beautiful 93-acre lake and 5 miles of wooded trails to explore.

The park has an interesting history, which you may enjoy learning more about while visiting! The land was purchased from local farmers in 1948 and the lake was created by damming a nearby water source.

As well, the area was once home to Argyle Hollow, which was part of the stagecoach route between Galena and Beardstown in the 19th century. Today, the region is known for its coal, clay, and limestone resources.

Also, if you’re a fan of Bigfoot, keep your eyes peeled – there have been several sightings reported in recent years!

The Banner Marsh State Fish and Wildlife Area is a true hidden gem in Illinois. It’s hard to believe that what was once a drained marsh and strip-mined land has been transformed into a breathtaking state park covering over 4,000 acres.

Thanks to the reclamation project completed in 2003, the park boasts an optimized habitat for wildlife, including fish and waterfowl, making it the perfect spot for fishing and birdwatching.

The project also improved flood control and increased food and cover for wildlife- nature lovers can rest assured that our little woodland friends are being looked after!

Bartlett Woods Nature Preserve

Bartlett Woods Nature Preserve is a 23-acre park located in Lee County, USA, and is situated along the bank of the Big Bureau Creek.

Bartlett Woods is a remnant of a larger forest that is no longer extant. Despite this, the preserve still boasts a diverse range of flora and fauna, making it an ideal spot for birdwatching and hiking.

The trails are also well-maintained and offer visitors a chance to explore!

If you’re looking for a peaceful escape from the hustle and bustle of city life, Beall Woods State Park is the perfect place to unwind. With its 329-acre old-growth forest, this state park is a nature lover’s paradise!

The forest is made up of hardwoods that were once part of the Eastern Woodlands ecosystem, and it has been designated as a Natural Area by the state of Illinois.

In fact, portions of Beall Woods State Park have been designated a National Natural Landmark as the Forest of the Wabash.

The park offers a small campground and a visitor center. You can also explore the park’s 6+1⁄4 miles (10.1 km) of hiking trails, which wind through the forest and along the banks of the Wabash River.

For all modern amenities, the nearest towns with commercial infrastructure are Grayville and Mount Carmel.

Legend has it that the park was once used as a blind canyon for Native Americans to capture buffalo, adding to its rich history.

One of the main attractions of the park is the Effigy Tumuli, which consists of five earth art animal sculptures native to the Illinois River. These sculptures pay tribute to Native American tradition and are a unique addition to the park!

The park is located just five miles east of Utica, making it easily accessible for visitors.

The 4,900-acre lake is the star attraction, with plenty of accessible boat launches, a fishing pier, and bank fishing areas to choose from.

Anglers will love the variety of fish they can catch, including crappie, catfish, bass, and walleye. Boating is also popular on the lake, with motorboats of all sizes and sailboats taking to the water.

When you’re ready to take a break from the water, you can head to the beautiful 1,000-foot sand beach for some swimming and sunbathing.

Or, if hunting is your thing, you’ll find more than 3,600 acres of land available for rabbits, pheasants, squirrels, doves, archery, and firearm deer hunting, as well as special hunts for youth and hunters with disabilities.

This park covers almost 300 acres of beautiful oak-hickory forests, with plenty of wildlife to discover, and the mix of forest, prairie, and wetlands provides a unique landscape to explore.

If you enjoy animal sightings, keep an eye out for muskrats, turtles, herons, and mussels near the water, and watch for red-tailed hawks, blue jays, and dragonflies soaring overhead.

If you’re lucky, you might even spot a coyote, white-tailed deer, or black rat snake!

Crawford County State Fish and Wildlife Area

The Crawford County State Fish and Wildlife Area is a must-visit destination. The park spans over 1,100 huntable acres, with an additional 608 acres of timber and 330 acres of brushy fields.

The area is characterized by rolling hills, with a steep bluff located south of Hutson Creek, which bisects the park. The creek also features 100 acres of bottomland, mostly on the north side.

To improve wildlife habitat, some open land is farmed to ensure abundant and high-quality grain foods for game and other wildlife species.

The forested areas are home to mature oak-hickory trees, making it a beautiful place to hike, bird-watch, or simply relax in nature!

Eldon Hazlet State Recreation Area is a must-visit destination for anyone looking for a fun-filled outdoor adventure. This vast 3,000-acre site on the western shore of Carlyle Lake offers a wide range of recreational activities for over 800,000 visitors annually.

This park offers opportunities for camping, fishing, boating, bird watching, hiking, and even hunting. You can also enjoy the popular sailboat regattas, held almost every summer weekend!

Named after the first president of the Kaskaskia Valley Association, Eldon Hazlet SRA is leased by the IDNR from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, which built the 26,000-acre lake.

The Illini Campground is the largest in the Illinois state park system, with 328 Class A campsites with 30 and 50-amp electrical hook-ups, 36 Class C campsites for walk-in tent camping, and two rustic rent-a-cabins.

The park was purchased by the state in 1949 and is now operated by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources. While the original entrance was replaced in the 1980s due to safety concerns, the park is still accessible by bike via a spur trail along IL 37.

Fort Massac State Park

If you’re looking for a state park that’s close to the city, the Frank Holten State Recreation Area is a great choice. Located less than five miles southeast of the Gateway Arch in Greater St. Louis, this urban park offers 1,080 acres of outdoor fun!

The park is bisected by Interstate 255, making it easily accessible for visitors. Originally known as Lake Park, it was the third-largest municipal park in the nation at the time of its completion in 1932.

After being sold to the State of Illinois in 1964, it was renamed Frank Holten in honor of a distinguished local legislator.

Today, the park is home to the Grand Marais Golf Course and two beautiful lakes, Whispering Willow Lake and Grand Marais Lake, which offer over 200 acres of water and 5 miles of shoreline for fishing and boating.

Franklin Creek State Natural Area

Franklin Creek State Natural Area is a beautiful park located in Lee County, Illinois. The park is home to the stunning Franklin Creek, which flows throughout the 882-acre area.

The ecosystem of the park comprises several large natural springs, hardwood forests, bedrock outcroppings, and a large variety of flora and fauna.

The mill spring, the largest in the park, provided water power for the largest grist mill in Lee County, constructed in 1847.

The site includes a 198-acre nature preserve, which is an outstanding and diverse natural area in a uniquely beautiful setting. Visitors can hike and enjoy seasonal cross-country skiing and snowmobile trails, along with equestrian trails.

The equestrian area contains 12 miles of trails developed and maintained by the Rock River Trail and Horseman’s Association.

The park is also home to various animal species, such as woodpeckers, flycatchers, thrushes, vireos, warblers, raccoons, chipmunks, gray and fox squirrels, beavers, and deer!

Fults Hill Prairie State Natural Area

If you’re looking for a unique natural experience, look no further than the Fults Hill Prairie State Natural Area! This nature preserve spans almost 1,000 acres and is dominated by steep limestone bluffs and ravines.

The highlight of the preserve is the 532-acre hill prairie that overlooks the Mississippi River and has been designated a National Natural Landmark.

The prairie is made up of grasses and forbs characteristic of the tallgrass prairie and is dotted with fire-resistant trees like the bur oak.

Fults Hill Prairie is home to a variety of species that can’t be found in many other places in Illinois, including big bluestem grass, plains scorpions, cacti, skinks, and fence lizards.

This park was originally owned by Mrs. William Gebhard, and in 1934, the Grundy County Rod & Gun Club purchased the land for $1,500.00. It was generously donated to the state of Illinois to create the beautiful Gebhard Woods State Park.

Nowadays, visitors to this state park can enjoy a variety of activities, including hiking, camping, fishing, and picnicking.

Giant City State Park is a must-visit destination for nature lovers. This land spans 4,000 acres and is located in the Jackson and Union Counties.

The park was established in 1927 and features a lodge and visitor center where you can get information about the many activities available.

Visitors to the park can enjoy hiking, horseback riding, picnicking, and rock climbing. Some of the most popular hiking trails include the Giant City Nature Trail, Red Cedar Trail, and Trillium Trail.

The park’s lodge and cabins were constructed by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s and have since been added to the National Register of Historic Places.

The lodge now houses a restaurant and gift shop, while the cabins are used to lodge visitors to the park.

The Goose Lake Prairie State Natural Area is a 2,537-acre state park and nature preserve, home to a vast tallgrass prairie that has been preserved as a natural area.

Located in Grundy County, just a few miles away from Morris and about 50 miles southwest of Chicago, the park offers a unique glimpse of the region’s postglacial outwash history.

The convergence of the Des Plaines River and Kankakee River near here forms the Illinois River. The park has a rich history of hunting, fishing, and gathering, and is home to a variety of waterfowl, fish, shellfish, beavers, and muskrats.

It’s a great place for nature enthusiasts, photographers, and anyone looking for a quiet place to enjoy the outdoors.

If you’re looking for a peaceful escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life, Hamilton County State Fish and Wildlife Area, also known as Dolan Lake, is the perfect spot.

Located just 8 miles southeast of McLeansboro off Route 14, Dolan Lake is the main attraction of the park. This 75-acre lake has 3 miles of shoreline and a maximum depth of 18 feet, making it a great spot for fishing.

Fishermen will be pleased with the variety of fish species to catch, such as largemouth basses, bluegill, sunfish, crappie, channel catfish, and bullheads.

If you’re bringing your own boat, a launching ramp is available. Remember, though, that motors are limited to 10 HP to keep the park quiet and peaceful.

Harry “Babe” Woodyard State Natural Area

The Harry Babe Woodyard State Natural Area covers over 1,100 acres of land, offering plenty of space to explore and unwind. The park is named after a local farmer who served in the Illinois House and Senate for over a decade.

What’s really interesting about this area is that part of it used to be owned by the Boy Scouts of America and was known as Camp Cherokee Hills. In 1996, the land was sold to the state and became an addition to the Harry Babe Woodyard State Natural Area.

Hazel & Bill Rutherford Wildlife Prairie State Park

With over 9.6 km of passages to explore, you’ll have plenty of opportunities to see the stunning stalactites, stalagmites, and other formations that make this cave so special.

And with a constant temperature of 58 °F (14 °C), it’s the perfect place to escape the heat on a hot summer day. Just be aware that some passages can flood during wet weather, so plan your visit accordingly.

This park is located off Illinois Route 3, south of Waterloo, near the charming community of Burksville, so if you’re in the area, make sure to stop by!

This vast area covers over 16,000 acres of prairie and woodland, managed by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources.

The site is named after former Illinois Governor Jim Edgar and is home to an incredible variety of species, including mourning doves, pheasants, quail, snipe, woodcock, and rabbit.

The open spaces are managed to feed and encourage these populations, making it a popular destination for hunters.

But JEPC isn’t just for hunting – several small ponds and artificial lakes are stocked with fish, including the state fish, bluegill.

As well, if you’re a birdwatcher, JEPC is a must-visit, with 87 species of birds spotted in the Cox Creek Hill Prairie State Natural Area alone!

Located just 6 miles west of Peoria, this state park is home to the Jubilee College State Historic Site, which was a frontier Illinois college that operated from 1840 to 1862.

Founded by Episcopal bishop Philander Chase, Jubilee College was one of the earliest educational enterprises in the state.

Today, visitors can explore the original Chase residence and church, and even take a guided tour of the 1840s building that housed the school’s chapel, classrooms, and dormitory facilities.

There are over 3,200 acres to explore, including 90 acres of college grounds, which makes this a great stop for those who love a good walking tour!

Kaskaskia River State Fish & Wildlife Area

This expansive site, which is one of the largest state-owned and managed areas in Illinois, offers over 20,000 acres of land to explore!

The area stretches along the Kaskaskia River from Fayetteville to the Mississippi River and is located just a 35-mile drive from St. Louis, Missouri.

Managed by the Department of Natural Resources, Kaskaskia River SFWA is perfect for fishing, hiking, and other outdoor activities.

Baldwin Lake, a 2,018-acre reservoir, is also part of the area and is open for fishing. Also, if you’re a bird-watcher, you’ll love that this lake serves as a waterfowl refuge.

However, please note that some areas are managed for industrial use and aren’t accessible to the public.

This site is owned and operated by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources Division of Historic Preservation. It commemorates Camp River Dubois, the camp of the Lewis and Clark Expedition from December 1803 to May 1804.

It’s located just off the Confluence Bike Trail and is at the southern end of the Meeting of the Great Rivers Scenic Route, making it easily accessible for visitors.

The 14,000-square-foot interpretive center is a main attraction, featuring a theater, multiple hands-on exhibits and displays, and a full-scale cutaway keelboat.

Additionally, the outdoor replica of Camp River Dubois is a great way to experience what life was like during the original expedition!

This 1,023-acre park, located in Clark County just south of Marshall, is home to the stunning 146-acre Lincoln Trail Lake, which is perfect for fishing, boating, and hiking.

If you’re looking for a state park that combines history, art, and nature, then Lowden State Park is the perfect destination. This 207-acre park, located in Ogle County, Illinois, is named after Governor Frank Orren Lowden, who served Illinois during World War I.

The park is famous for its Black Hawk Statue, created by artist Lorado Taft, which overlooks the scenic Rock River. In addition to the statue, visitors can enjoy hiking on four miles of moderately difficult trails that wind through the park’s natural features.

Additionally, Lowden park also offers picnic areas, campsites, and limited aquatic recreation, including fishing, water skiing, and boating along the Rock River.

Mackinaw River State Fish and Wildlife Area

If you’re looking for a nature-filled getaway, the Mackinaw River State Fish and Wildlife Area in Tazewell County, Illinois is the perfect place to go!

This 1,448-acre state park is operated by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources. It’s an island of natural drainage into the vulnerable river and takes up less than 1.2% of the river’s total watershed.

Originally donated to the state by the Parklands Foundation in 1970, the Mackinaw River SFWA is primarily wooded land with some upland meadows and two sections of Mackinaw River bottomland that offer direct access to the river.

While it’s primarily managed for deer hunting, the park also welcomes fishing and canoeing.

The Mackinaw River is a free-running river throughout most of its length and therefore offers potential for the preservation of fish and shellfish species (particularly mussels) historically associated with the tallgrass prairie.

With nearly 10 miles of scenic Illinois River backwaters, bottomlands, and bluffs, the area boasts a rich variety of animals, plants, and outdoor activities.

The area consists of three units, the largest being the Marshall Unit, which has a small campground, boat ramp, fishing channel, and hiking trails.

The Spring Beach Unit is a great spot for a picnic, fishing, hunting, and hiking, with terrain ranging from upland forest to river-bottom to cropland.

The Sparland Unit, although small, is a popular spot for waterfowl hunting and fishing (Note that boat access can be challenging during low water).

Mitchell’s Grove Nature Preserve was generously donated to the state of Illinois by William and Irene Mitchell in 1997, so it’s a wonderful place to enjoy the beauty of nature while also supporting the preservation of the environment!

Moraine Hills State Park

Nestled in the heart of Illinois, Moraine Hills State Park is a treasure trove of natural beauty and wonder!

The park’s name comes from the geological formation of a moraine, which is an accumulation of boulders and debris deposited by a glacier.

Visitors can explore the park’s wooded hills and ridges, which are made up of gravel-rich deposits called kames. The park is home to Lake Defiance, a glacial lake that has remained largely undeveloped, maintaining a near-natural condition.

The Pike Marsh and Leatherleaf Bog are two of the park’s most notable features, with rare plant species and unique geological formations.

Moraine Hills also offers visitors the opportunity to witness the success of wetland enhancements, with Yellow-head, Black Tern, and Opossum Run marshes as examples.

If you’re looking for a state park that has it all, look no further than Moraine View State Recreation Area in Illinois. This 1,687-acre park has been around since 1959 and has something for everyone!

The park was one of eleven slated to close in 2008 due to budget cuts, but thankfully it reopened to the public in 2009. Today, visitors can camp, swim, fish, and enjoy many other activities at this lovely site!

Camping options range from Class A sites with electricity and modern amenities to group camps and primitive backpacking sites.

Also, hunters are welcome to come for the whitetail deer, pheasant, and wild turkey!

Nauvoo State Park is a gem nestled on the banks of the Mississippi River in Illinois. The name “Nauvoo” means beautiful place or pleasant land in Hebrew, and it lives up to its name with its serene surroundings.

Originally known as Quashquema, a Fox Indian word for a peaceful place, this historic town is the backdrop for the state park.

The park covers 148 acres and boasts a 13-acre lake with a mile-long shoreline. Visitors can enjoy fishing, boating, camping, and hiking while taking in the beautiful scenery.

The park also hosts an annual grape festival and offers a chance to soak up the area’s rich history, so make sure to plan your visit around this fun event!

It offers public access to Lake Michigan and is situated next to the Illinois Beach State Park, which preserves the last remaining shore in the state.

With a protected floating dock system of 1,500 slips ranging from 30 to 60 feet, this marina is the perfect midpoint between Chicago and Milwaukee.

Peabody River State Fish and Wildlife Area

Peabody River State Fish and Wildlife Area is a hidden gem in Randolph County, Illinois. This state park spans over 2,200 acres, offering visitors a chance to explore the beautiful landscape and abundant wildlife.

What makes this park unique is that it was built on reclaimed mines that were once worked by the Peabody Coal Company.

Today, visitors can enjoy hiking trails, fishing in ponds and lakes, and hunting in designated areas, and there’s a shooting range and picnic areas available!

Pekin Lake State Fish and Wildlife Area

Pekin Lake State Fish and Wildlife Area in Illinois is a haven for outdoor sports enthusiasts. Managed by the IDNR, the Wildlife Area offers licensed hunting of deer and waterfowl, as well as trapping of fur-bearing small mammals like beaver and muskrat.

The area is located in Pekin, a historic location of wetland hunting and fur trapping, and it protects waterlogged land used for this purpose.

The Wildlife Area is subject to frequent and repeated river flooding due to its riparian ecosystem. It contains two ribbon lakes, Pekin Lake and Worley Lake, that parallel the Illinois River.

While the area has changed a great deal from its pioneer days, it remains a popular destination for hunters and trappers!

This state park is situated on 198 acres of land in Jackson and Randolph Counties and is home to some of the most stunning scenery in the state.

One of the highlights of this park is the cliff face that contains several Native American petroglyphs, which have been preserved for centuries. In 2001, the cliff face was added to the National Register of Historic Places.

However, it’s worth noting that modern graffiti has been added to the site, so be respectful when you visit.

Powerton Lake State Fish and Wildlife Area

Powerton Lake State Fish and Wildlife Area is a hidden gem located southwest of Pekin, Illinois. This 1,426-acre area is owned by NRG Energy but operated by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, making it a semi-protected habitat.

The lake is a popular fishing spot, with blue catfish being the main catch. It’s also a great location for duck and goose hunting during legal hunting seasons, with approximately 60% of the cooling pond dedicated to this activity.

Red Hills State Park is a fantastic destination for year-round recreation. With over 967 acres of land, there’s plenty of space to enjoy outdoor activities like boating, fishing, hiking, hunting, and even winter sports.

The park has a restaurant that’s open year-round, and there are shaded picnic areas and three picnic pavilions.

If you want to stay overnight, there are over 100 campsites available with modern facilities, and even a cabin to rent. The park also has 8 miles of trails for hiking, horseback riding, and cross-country skiing, as well as basketball and volleyball courts.

Fishermen will be thrilled to know that the lake is open year-round, and ice fishing is allowed when the ice is thick enough!

As well, hunters can legally hunt white-tailed deer, quail, woodcocks, doves, wild turkeys, and rabbits at the park (though deer must be taken with a bow).

Rend Lake State Fish and Wildlife Area

Rend Lake State Fish and Wildlife Area is a true gem in the state of Illinois. This beautiful area boasts a variety of habitats, including bottomland hardwoods, upland ag fields, and 3,000 acres of impounded water in the sub-impoundments managed primarily for waterfowl.

The food produced by tenant farming, site staff farming, and moist-soil production attracts a wide variety of wildlife, making it a great spot for birdwatching and nature photography.

The area also includes a 5,000-acre waterfowl refuge, which is closed during waterfowl use periods, and all areas are open to fishing most of the year.

With active habitat management occurring throughout the year, visitors can always expect to see something new and exciting at this beautiful park!

Rock Island Trail State Park is a 26-mile-long public rail trail spanning Peoria and Stark counties. It was designated as a National Recreation Trail in 2003 and is open for use to the public.

This trail is a great place to go hiking, ride a bike, go horseback riding, or simply enjoy a walk through nature.

The southern end of the trail is located at Pioneer Parkway in north Peoria, while the northern end is in Toulon, the county seat of Stark County. So, if you’re in the vicinity, try to fit in some time at this lovely park!

Sand Ridge State Forest

If you’re looking for a state forest with a little bit of everything, the Sand Ridge State Forest is definitely worth a visit. It’s the largest state forest in Illinois, covering 7,200 acres of land in northern Mason County.

The forest is situated on a sand ridge that overlooks the Illinois River, offering some stunning views.

Interestingly, this area is believed to be an artifact of the post-glacial Kankakee Torrent. The forest was largely created in 1939 when the state of Illinois purchased submarginal sandy farmland for conservation purposes.

Today, the forest contains over 3,900 acres of dryland oak-hickory woodlands, 2,400 acres of pine woodlands, and nearly 800 acres of open fields and sand prairies.

One of the coolest things about Sand Ridge is that it’s home to the prickly pear cactus, which is more commonly found in the Southwest.

If you’re interested in history, you’ll definitely want to check out the Clear Lake Site, which is an archeological site listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Overall, Sand Ridge State Forest is a beautiful spot to explore and take in some of Illinois’ natural beauty.

If you’re a fan of hunting and wildlife management, then you’ll want to check out the Sanganois State Fish and Wildlife Area.

This park is primarily focused on waterfowl management but also offers opportunities for forest game and furbearer hunting.

The landscape is a beautiful bottomland complex with sloughs, backwater lakes, timbered ponds, and bottomland timber. You’ll find a variety of willow, maple, and cottonwood trees throughout the area.

If you’re interested in waterfowl hunting, be sure to note that it’s restricted to marked blind sites and a designated walk-in area. There are around 60 blind sites that are drawn for on an annual basis, and roughly 500 acres that are open to walk-in hunting.

Keep in mind that the park is actively managing the habitat year-round, so you’ll be able to enjoy the wildlife in a thriving environment.

Nowadays, visitors can enjoy a variety of activities such as fishing, hiking, and daytime hunting. Some of the animals you might spot during your visit include largemouth bass, bluegill, deer, squirrel, doves, rabbits, quail, ducks, and turkey.

While there are no site-specific regulations, be sure to follow the statewide ones to ensure a safe and enjoyable visit.

Silver Springs State Fish & Wildlife Area is a fantastic park located in Kendall County. This park is spread over 1,350 acres and is home to a natural spring, two artificial lakes, and the Fox River, which flows through the northern end of the park.

The park offers a wide range of activities, such as fishing, hunting, boating, and hiking. You can also find areas of native prairie restoration, a sledding hill, and a seven-mile equestrian trail.

During the fall and winter, over 1,300 acres of the park are opened to the public for hunting.

Spitler Woods State Natural Area is a hidden gem located in the Decatur metropolitan area. The park is named after Ida B. Spitler, who generously donated the land to the state of Illinois in 1937.

This 202.5-acre state park boasts an old-growth forest grove filled with white oak and hickory trees.

Hikers can enjoy two trails totaling 2.5 miles in length, where they can observe the loessy soil formation along Squirrel Creek. The park is home to many wildlife species, including squirrels and deer, although hunting is prohibited.

Spring Lake Fish and Wildlife Area is a beautiful state park located in Tazewell County, Illinois. The park is spread over a vast area of 2,032 acres, and the star attraction is the stunning Spring Lake.

The lake is an 8.5-mile-long alluvial lake that runs parallel to the Illinois River. It is a shallow lake with a maximum depth of 10 feet, making it an excellent spot for fishing and boating.

The lake has undergone extensive modifications over the years due to the construction of dikes, which has resulted in it becoming a unique attraction. The park is also home to Saiwell Lake, which is separated from Spring Lake by a spur dike.

This conservation area spans over 5,000 acres in Union County, Illinois, and was established in 1929. The park’s name comes from the fact that it sits along the route that the Cherokee were forced to take during their relocation in 1838.

Today, visitors can enjoy 22 miles of hiking and equestrian trails, explore the 222-acre Ozark Hills Nature Preserve, and even visit the state tree nursery.

If you’re looking for a picturesque bike trail, Tunnel Hill is definitely worth checking out. The trail stretches 55 miles from Eldorado to Karnak, following the former bed of the Cairo and Vincennes Railroad.

This area is abundant in the region’s history, as the railway was led by Civil War General Ambrose Burnside during its early years. The trail connects to several other trails, including the Trail of Tears National Historic Trail, so you can extend your ride if you’re up for a challenge.

The surface is crushed limestone, so it’s ideal for hiking or gravel cycling. Just keep in mind that the trail can be soft during certain times of the year, so it’s best to come prepared with a suitable bike.

Turkey Bluffs State Fish and Wildlife Area

If you’re looking for a state park in Illinois that offers a diverse array of habitats, Turkey Bluffs State Fish and Wildlife Area is the perfect spot.

With 2,265 acres of land, including 350 open acres, 1,700 timbered acres, and 10 acres of water from the Mary’s River, there’s plenty to explore!

The park is located in southwestern Illinois on the bluffs of the Mississippi River, so you can expect to see a range of topography from level flood plains to steep hills.

Note, though, that the site conducts a prescribed fire program and an agricultural program to maintain and restore native woodland and grassland habitats, which may affect hunting activities.

This beautiful park covers over 6,000 acres in the Lower Mississippi River bottomlands of Illinois. With numerous shallow sloughs and other water areas scattered throughout, it’s a haven for all kinds of wildlife.

The park’s farming activities make it particularly attractive to wintering geese, which flock here in large numbers.

But it’s not just geese that you’ll see here – visitors can also spot white-tailed deer, eagles, and other fascinating creatures!

Unlike most of the parks on this list, public use of interior gravel roads is restricted. However, special permissions are sometimes granted for research or tours.
