Zollicoffer-Thomas Scenic Byway
Kentucky
10.4 miles
Winding through the rolling hills of southeastern Kentucky, the Zollicoffer-Thomas Scenic Byway traces 10.36 miles of rich Civil War history and Appalachian beauty. Named for Confederate General Felix Zollicoffer and Union General George H. Thomas, whose forces clashed at the Battle of Mill Springs in 1862, this state-designated scenic byway connects travelers to one of the war’s most pivotal early engagements.
Along the route, expect sweeping views of pastoral farmland, dense hardwood forests, and the shimmering waters of Lake Cumberland in the distance. Stop at the Mill Springs Battlefield National Monument to walk the hallowed grounds where the Union secured its first significant western victory. Interpretive markers and preserved earthworks bring the landscape’s dramatic past to life.
Beyond the battlefield, the byway passes through quiet Kentucky communities where roadside pastures, old stone fences, and weathered tobacco barns paint a picture of timeless rural charm. Keep an eye out for wildflowers blanketing the hillsides in spring and brilliant foliage in autumn.
Allow about 30 to 45 minutes for the drive, longer if you plan to explore the battlefield grounds. Late spring through mid-fall offers the best conditions, with October delivering spectacular color against the rolling Kentucky terrain.
